    World Cup fever boosts business

    Azlan Othman

Some restaurants saw a boost of business as local fans flocked to catch the World Cup matches, as it entered the quarter final stage starting last night with Croatia facing Brazil.

A 24-hour outlet, Semporna Enak restaurant in Kampong Rimba, which is screening the match has seen football fans patronising the restaurant round the clock.

Restaurant waiter Nani told the Weekend Bulletin that football fans also turned up at wee hours to catch their favourite teams. She said the majority of the locals visiting the restaurant were supporters of Portugal and Brazil.

“The crowd would stay on until the matches end,” she said yesterday, adding that they opted to come in when the matches start and leave at the final whistle while enjoying various delicacies served at the restaurant.

Sometimes, customers had to book a table in advance to avoid disappointment.

She said business during the World Cup season has been good with more people coming to the restaurant to watch the matches on their big screen.

Another restaurant staff Jenny said the unpredictable weather did not dampen the crowds’ mood as they continue to patronise the tables set up indoor and outdoor.

“We do get quite a crowd who want to watch the matches with many preferring to sit outdoors.”

Meanwhile, a staff from TK Tea House Restaurant in Kiarong and an avid Brazil fan Rifan said the response at the restaurant has been very good because whenever there are matches, fans do come, adding that many locals support Argentina and Portugal.

Another staff Puteri said they have enough staff to cater to the crowd. The restaurant is open until 5am.

Meanwhile, a restaurant patron Jamal Zuin said football fans need to control their emotion as it sometimes gets too noisy for the other customers.

“They need to be sensitive too for the others patronising the restaurant with their families,” Jamal said.

K-pop star among eight to join Japan tycoon Maezawa’s moon trip

TOKYO (AP) – Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa said yesterday that K-Pop star TOP will be among the eight people who will join him on a flyby around the moon on a SpaceX spaceship next year.

The Japanese tycoon launched plans for the lunar voyage in 2018, buying all the seats on the spaceship.

He began taking applications from around the world in March 2021 for what will be his second space journey after his 12-day trip to the International Space Station on the Soyuz Russian spaceship last year.

The eight people Maezawa selected for his “dearMoon project” are TOP, who debuted as a lead rapper for the K-Pop group Big Bang; American DJ Steve Aoki; filmmaker Brendan Hall and YouTuber Tim Dodd, also of the United States.

The other four are British photographer Karim Illiya, Indian actor Dev Joshi, Czech artist Yemi AD and Irish photographer Rhiannon Adam.

American Olympic snowboarder Kaitlyn Farrington and Japanese dancer Miyu were chosen as backups.

TOP’s real name is Choi Seung-hyun (NEWS1, pic above). The 35-year-old started out as an underground rapper before joining Big Bang, one of the world’s top boy bands, in 2006. TOP said in a video released by the dearMoon website that he has always fantasised about space and the moon since he was a child and, “I cannot wait. When I finally see the moon closer I look forward to my personal growth and returning to the earth as an artist with an inspiration,” he said.

Maezawa made the announcement on his Twitter and the dearMoon Project website yesterday, after he tweeted last week saying he held an online meeting with Elon Musk and that his “major announcement about space” was underway.

He and the others would be among the first to travel on the SpaceX vehicle. The trip is expected to take about a week. The spaceship will not make a lunar landing but is expected to come within 200 kilometres of the moon’s surface while circling it for three days.

The trip is expected next year, though the exact schedule has not been disclosed.

Last year, Maezawa, 47, and his producer Yozo Hirano became the first self-paying tourists to visit the space station since 2009. He has not disclosed the cost for that mission, though reports said he paid USD80 million.

Maezawa made his fortune in retail fashion, launching Japan’s largest online fashion mall, Zozotown. In 2019, he resigned as CEO of the e-commerce company Zozo Inc to devote his time to space travel. Forbes magazine estimates his wealth at USD1.9 billion.

Caretaker gets jail for stealing from employer

    Fadley Faisal

A local caretaker was sentenced to a year’s jail by the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after a trial on a charge of stealing from his employer.

Muhammad Adiy Osmera bin Abdullah @ ED Osmera bin Tikus, 48, was found guilty of the charge and convicted by Magistrate Nur Eleana binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hairol Arni on finding Prosecutor Ahmad Firdaus bin Mohammad to have proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.

Defence counsel Lieutenant Colonel (Rtd) Harif Ibrahim of his own firm represented the defendant.

It was revealed that the defendant struck up a plan with two other colleagues, who had been dealt with in court on their guilty pleas, to steal from Bandtree Sdn Bhd and obtain money. On May 21, 2021, the trio took two vehicles and loaded four royal street lamp bases from Bandtree’s compound in Jerudong.

The duo drove away while the defendant stayed back at the office compound.

As the defendant’s colleagues made their move, the defendant noticed a drone hovering above.

The defendant called one of his accomplices telling him to bring back the stolen items, without avail.

The defendant called up his other colleague whom he knew would fly drones within the compound.

The drone owner admitted to flying it, and when he called the defendant in to see him at his office later, told the defendant that he had recorded the trio’s actions earlier in the afternoon from a camera on the drone.

The defendant told the drone owner to erase the footage, and even offered to reward him, but was turned down.

The same afternoon, the duo sold the stolen items for BND270 to a scrapyard and returned to the office to share the cash among themselves.

The trio’s actions became known to the management leading to a police report.

Members of the management managed to recover the stolen items from the scrapyard.

The trio were then served letters of suspension from work.

Girl licensed to own unicorn – if she finds one

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A girl named Madeline, with a vivid imagination and remarkable awareness of how bureaucracy can dash dreams, got her wish when she asked Los Angeles (LA) animal control authorities for a license to own a unicorn – if she’s able to find one.

The first-of-its-kind permit came with strings attached, however: The mythical creature must be provided ample exposure to sunlight, moonbeams and rainbows and have its horn polished at least once a month with a soft cloth.

Director Marcia Mayeda of the county Department of Animal Care and Control sent the girl a heart-shaped, rose-coloured metal tag with ‘Permanent Unicorn License’ emblazoned on it, along with a white fuzzy unicorn doll with pink ears, purple hooves and a silver horn.

The department’s response came after the girl wrote it a brief letter last month, “Dear LA County, I would like your approval if I can have a unicorn in my backyard if I can find one.”

Mayeda commended the girl for her “sense of responsible pet ownership to seek permission in advance” and for thoughtfully considering “the requirements of providing a loving home to animals”.

The agency posted images of the correspondence, the license, the medallion and the stuffed toy on its social media accounts, with the girl’s last name obscured.

15 makers reach automatic braking goals this year

DETROIT (AP) – Fifteen automakers have made life-saving automatic emergency braking standard on nearly all of their new passenger vehicles in the United States (US) this year, fulfilling a voluntary commitment made six years ago.

That leaves five companies – General Motors, Porsche, Jaguar/Land Rover, Kia and Maserati – still needing to meet the pledge by August 31, 2023, the end of the current model year.

Audi, BMW, Ford/Lincoln, Honda/Acura, Hyundai/Genesis, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan/Infiniti, Stellantis, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota/Lexus, Volkswagen and Volvo all hit the target, according to data collected by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Automatic Emergency Braking can detect objects in the way and stop or slow a vehicle, preventing a crash or making it less severe. IIHS said that the systems have to earn the institute’s advanced rating, slowing a vehicle by at least 10 miles per hour (mph) in either the 12mph or 25mph test, or by 5mph in both tests.

The automakers’ commitment will prevent 42,000 crashes and 20,000 injuries by 2025, according to IIHS estimates. Institute research has found that vehicles with both forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking cut the number of rear crashes in half.

General Motors, the nation’s top automaker by sales, reported that 73 per cent of its models had the technology at the end of the 2022 model year. But a spokesman said GM would hit 98 per cent by the end of the current model year, barring supply chain issues.

Kia reached 94 per cent for the 2022 model year and says it will hit the agreed goal of 95 per cent in model year 2023. Jaguar-Land Rover and Porsche made substantial progress as well, with about three-quarters of their new vehicles equipped with the system. Maserati dropped one percentage point to 71 per cent, the IIHS said.

Maserati said its entire lineup now has AEB standard for the 2023 model year. The data analysed by IIHS is based on production from the model year that ended last August, the automaker said.

Messages were left seeking comment from Kia, Jaguar-Land Rover and Porsche.

The 20 automakers pledged in 2016 to make the braking systems standard on most of their new models in an agreement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and IIHS.

NHTSA, the US government’s road safety agency, is in the process of requiring the systems on new passenger vehicles.

Automakers also have agreed to make automatic emergency braking standard on larger vehicles, mainly heavy-duty trucks weighing 8,501 to 10,000 pounds, by the model year that starts in September of 2025.
