Seminar emphasises importance of open science, collaborative research

Transparency, accessibility and collaboration in scientific research are essential towards accelerating discovery and innovation, said Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) Assistant Vice-Chancellor (External and Industry Relations) Dr Mohamad Saiful bin Haji Omar in his opening remarks of the Open Science Seminar held yesterday at UTB’s premises.

The seminar, part of the three-day Konsortium Universiti Universitas Borneo (KUUB) Convention 2024, saw Ir Dr Shaliza Ibrahim deliver the first session on ‘Introduction to Open Science Principles’.

She provided an overview of the fundamental concepts of open science, stressing the importance of making research data and outputs freely available to the scientific community and the public.

Her presentation offered practical insights into how researchers can adopt open science practices in their work, fostering a culture of openness and inclusivity in research.

The second session, presented by Professor ChM Dr Mohd Basyaruddin Abdul Rahman, addressed ‘Building Collaborative Research Networks’, which discussed the critical role of collaboration in scientific research, particularly in the context of addressing complex global challenges.

He outlined strategies for building effective research networks that transcend geographical and disciplinary boundaries, enabling researchers to pool resources, share expertise, and drive impactful outcomes.

The seminar concluded with a visit to the ASEAN Traditional Textile Exhibition at the university’s multipurpose hall, where participants had the opportunity to explore innovative textile technologies and sustainable practices in the region.

The showcase provided a unique platform for dialogue between researchers and industry stakeholders, highlighting the potential for cross-sector collaboration in driving economic and environmental sustainability.

The KUUB Open Science Seminar marks an important step forward in the promotion of open science and collaborative research in Borneo and the broader ASEAN region.

It reflects KUUB’s ongoing commitment to advancing scientific excellence and fostering a collaborative research environment that benefits both academia and society. – James Kon
