Johnson sorry for partygate scandal as calls to quit mount

LONDON (AFP) – United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday apologised for attending a lockdown-breaching party held in his Downing Street garden, but deflected calls to resign as the opposition leader called him a “man without shame”.

After days of dismal headlines and collapsing poll ratings, Johnson said he regarded the newly revealed get-together in May 2020 as a work event for Downing Street staff. He conceded he did not appreciate how the event would look to millions of Britons who were respecting COVID rules, even missing out on farewells to dying relatives.

“And to them and to this House I offer my heartfelt apologies,” Johnson told a stormy session of questions in the House of Commons.

“With hindsight I should have sent everyone back inside. I should have found some other way to thank them (his staff),” he added, admitting he had been present for about 25 minutes.

Keir Starmer, leader of the main opposition Labour party, said the public believed Johnson was “lying through his teeth. The only question is will the British public kick him out, will his party kick him out, or will he do the decent thing and resign?”

“The prime minister’s a man without shame,” Starmer added, for the first time joining other opposition leaders in demanding Johnson’s ouster.

Johnson – who was fired twice in previous jobs for lying to his bosses – had managed to weather one of the world’s worst COVID death tolls thanks to a successful mass vaccination campaign, and his record as the leader who effected Britain’s Brexit withdrawal from the European Union (EU).

South Korean rescuers locate man at collapsed construction site

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA (AP) – South Korean rescue workers at a collapsed construction site in the southern city of Gwangju located a man amid a pile of debris and broken concrete on their third day searching for six missing construction workers, officials said yesterday.

Crews are trying to clear out the rubble to reach the man, but have yet to confirm whether he is alive or one of the missing workers, said Yoo Man-geun, a Gwangju city official.

Dozens of rescue workers, assisted by dogs and drones equipped with thermal cameras, are searching the site, but their efforts have been slowed over worries about the stability of the high-rise building, which had been under construction in the city’s Hwajeongdong district before it partially collapsed on Tuesday.

HDC Hyundai Development, the main contractor for the apartment project, plans to deploy unmanned excavators to clear out the rubble and to use nettings and other safety measures in case the structure further crumbles, Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong-seop said.

About 10 vehicles were destroyed and nearly 200 households and shops nearby were forced to evacuate following the partial collapse of the building, which sent debris spilling across nearby streets and left a huge pile of rubble beneath the towering, 39-floor structure that is now exposing mangled steel beams.

The incident has triggered public anger in a country that has long grappled with deadly accidents attributed to lax safety standards and regulations, which experts said were often overlooked as the country rose from poverty and war to an Asian economic powerhouse.

The number of government school candidates who obtained Grade A-C in five subjects is 2,984 (71.70 per cent) while the achievement of Grade A-C for private school candidates is 1,569 (85.50 per cent).

A total of 1,229 candidates (20.49 per cent) obtained Grade A in all five subjects. Out of that figure, 651 candidates are government school candidates. Some 1,058 (86.08 per cent) candidates out of 1,229 candidates who obtained five Grade A are Bruneians.

Meanwhile, the achievement of candidates who obtained four Grade As and one Grade B was 567 (70.00 per cent) out of the 810 candidates were from government schools.

Music-loving pope visits Rome record store

ROME (AFP) – Pope Francis, a lover of classical music, made a surprise visit to a Rome record store to bless the premises – and picked up some vinyl while there.

The 85-year-old pontiff slipped into Stereosound, located across from the Pantheon, on Tuesday evening to bless the shop after its recent renovation.

The Argentine pontiff, who has previously spoken of the power of music, has been visiting the little family-run store for decades, well before he became pope.

After Tuesday’s trip, he left with a gift – a 33 RPM record of classical music, according to Vatican News. “It was a quick visit, immense, great, human, wonderful! I have no other words,” Tiziana Esposito, daughter of the shop owner, Letizia Giostra, told AFP. “He has been coming, as a bishop, archbishop and cardinal, to buy classical music discs, both for

“He is a great music lover, of opera, voices. He especially loves Wagner, he knows what he likes.”

True to his roots, the pope is also “a great lover of tango”, she said, describing him as a “special person”. She confirmed she gave Francis a box set during the visit, which she said lasted around 20 minutes.

While he was inside the shop, which is painted white and filled with CDs and vinyl from the Beatles to classical composers, a small crowd gathered on the street outside.

However, the pope made no public comments as he got into his white Fiat 500L and was driven away.
