UK home asking prices are falling at sharpest pace in four years

ANN/THE STRAITS TIMES – Britain’s home sellers cut their asking prices at the quickest pace in four years after soaring interest rates made buyers more hesitant, British real estate website Rightmove said.

The property search website said the average asking price dropped by 2.1 per cent in December to GBP359,137, an acceleration from the 1.1 per cent decline in October. While sellers usually offer discounts in December to help complete sales before Christmas, Rightmove said the reduction was larger than usual for this time of year.

The figures add to evidence of a downturn in the property market, with the two biggest mortgage lenders reporting prices fell in each of the past three months. Rightmove said the drop in values next year is set to be limited to two per cent as constraints on affordability of new homes are balanced by an increase in people looking to buy.

“Some buyers are distracted, not only by the festive season, but also by the thought that they may get a better fixed rate mortgage deal and a more stable outlook by waiting until the new year,” said Rightmove’s director of property science Tim Bannister. “Our data suggests that there are many ready-to-go movers out there waiting for what they feel to be the right time to enter the market in 2023.”

Rightmove said the number of views on its website rose 11 per cent from a year ago, a sign that interest remains strong among potential buyers.

House prices in the south west of England fell the most in December, registering a drop of 3.4 per cent. The decline was not as pronounced in London, but the capital has seen the second-worst rate of annual growth in the country, up only 4.6 per cent from 2021.

December’s findings put price growth at 5.6 per cent for 2022, a slowdown on the 6.3 per cent growth seen in 2021. That underscores the toll that rising mortgage costs and economic uncertainty have taken on the market over the course of the year.

The Bank of England raised rates eight times in the past year, with its key rate hitting three per cent in November, up from close to zero in 2021. Interest rates on mortgages shot up to above six per cent in the wake of the former government’s disastrous fiscal statement on September 23, and have not dropped far below those heights, even though financial conditions have since stabilised.

Ronaldo says World Cup dream has ‘ended’

QATAR (AP) – Cristiano Ronaldo said in a cryptic social media post that his dream of winning the World Cup with Portugal has ended, while stopping short of announcing his retirement from international duty.

The 37-year-old Ronaldo left the field in tears after Portugal lost 1-0 to Morocco in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

In his first comments after the elimination, Ronaldo said that it was “time to take stock” without saying explicitly if he wants to carry on being available for Portugal after 19 years in the national team.

“There’s no point in reacting rashly,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram. “I just want everybody to know that a lot has been said, a lot has been written, a lot has been speculated about, but my dedication to Portugal has never wavered for an instant.

“I’ve always been just one more (Portuguese) fighting for everyone’s goal.”

“I would never turn my back on my teammates or my country.”

Ronaldo, who is the all-time leading scorer in men’s international soccer with 118 goals, said putting Portugal “on the highest level in the world” was his biggest dream.

“In my five appearances at World Cups over 16 years, always playing alongside great players and supported by millions of Portuguese, I have given my all,” he wrote. “I left everything I had on the pitch. I’ll never shrink from a battle and I have never given up on that dream.

      “Unfortunately, that dream ended yesterday.”

Ronaldo said he would now “let everyone draw their own conclusions”.

“For now. There’s not much else to say. Thank you, Portugal. Thank you, Qatar. The dream was beautiful as long as it lasted.”

The next major tournament is the European Championship in 2024. The next World Cup will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico in 2026, by which time Ronaldo will be 41 years old.

Ronaldo is without a club after leaving Manchester United during the World Cup in the wake of an explosive interview before the tournament when he criticised the manager, board and his teammates at the English club.

His only goal at the World Cup was a penalty against Ghana in Portugal’s opening group game.

      Bomb threat disrupts LaBelle concert

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN (AP) – Patti LaBelle was abruptly rushed off stage just a couple of songs into her Christmas concert in Milwaukee after a bomb threat forced authorities to evacuate the theatre.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that video from the Riverside Theater on Saturday night shows what appears to be two security officers interrupting the 78-year-old LaBelle as she chats with an audience member. They rush her off stage. Shortly after, someone announced that the nearly full 2,500-seat theatre had to be evacuated because of a bomb threat.

Milwaukee Police Captain Warren Allen Jr said in a statement early Sunday that K9 units searched the theatre and no explosive devices were discovered, so there was no threat to the public.

As of Sunday morning, LaBelle hadn’t issued a statement about the evacuation on social media. The operator of the Riverside Theater, Pabst Theater Group, said it would work with LaBelle to reschedule the show in the future.

Secret collector of Korea’s most expensive painting revealed

        Park Yuna

ANN/KOREA HERALD – For three years, rumours swirled around who was the mysterious winning bidder of Korean artist Kim Whan-ki’s dot painting 05-IV-71 #200 (Universe). The painting sold for HKD88 million (USD11 million) at a Christie’s auction in 2019, and remains the most expensive painting by a Korean artist to date.

The collector was recently revealed when Korean clothing manufacturer Global Sae-A Group announced the opening of an art gallery, S2A, in southern Seoul in July. The bidder was the group’s Chairman Kim Woong-ki who pledged to display Kim’s masterpiece at the gallery for people to appreciate the painting by Korea’s pioneer abstract artist.

The exhibition A Song that Permeates Whanki Kim’s Art shows 17 of Kim’s paintings, from his early works to later ones which were brought together by collectors, including the chairman himself. The exhibition features three areas of Kim’s artistic career: Seoul and Japan (1933-1955), Paris and Seoul (1956-1962) and New York (1963-1974).

The highlight of the exhibition is 05-IV-71 #200 (Universe), which is on display in a separate room at the exhibition space. The masterpiece is an all-over canvas dot painting and is the only diptych from Kim’s works. The countless blue dots draw audiences into the painting, which seems like the abyss of the universe. The painting was shown at Gallery Hyundai’s 50th anniversary exhibition in 2020, but the collector remained anonymous at the time.

Physician and long-time close friend Dr Matthew Kim, was the first collector of the painting, which was completed in 1971. He owned the painting for 47 years. It was displayed in his house from 1972 to 2004 and later showcased at the Whanki Museum in Seoul on a long-term loan.

The painting was put up for auction in 2019 in Hong Kong. Chairman Kim won the painting after an intense bidding competition.

Russians helping Ukrainian refugees in Bulgaria

VARNA, BULGARIA (AFP) – When Ukrainian Elena Bondarenko fled to Bulgaria after Russia invaded, she never imagined she would be taken in by a Russian there.

But that is exactly what happened to the bank clerk from Zaporizhzhia, one of many refugees fleeing the war who have been quietly sheltered by members of the country’s 17,500-strong Russian community.

Bondarenko and her mother and two small children were welcomed by a Russian who runs a children’s holiday camp near the Black Sea city of Burgas.

At first “it was a shock”, Bondarenko, 36, admitted. But “I am happy that not all Russians are aggressors.”

“When you are without a roof, and you need to save your children, it does not matter who helps you,” said another refugee, 34-year-old Anaida Petrushenko, who fled from Pavlohrad in eastern Ukraine with her three children.

He has taken in about 160 Ukrainian refugees, some of whom were shown the door at nearby hotels when the tourist season started.

“I never hid the fact that I am Russian because people saw that I wanted to help,” said the camp’s co-owner, who did not want to be named. While some Russians in Bulgaria are helping refugees, a large swathe of the Balkan nation remains resolutely pro-Russian.

And the Bulgarian government has often been less than welcoming when it comes to providing accommodation and support, forcing many Ukrainians to leave.

Of the some 932,000, who fled to Bulgaria since the invasion, only some 51,000 remain with less than 10,000 put up by the state, according to official data.

Indeed, the Russian who runs the holiday camp only gets a daily allowance of EUR7.50 per refugee from the Bulgarian government, and even these meagre payments are often delayed.

With some 60 children and 50 elderly people to look after, the Russian and his Bulgarian partner are having to cover the extra costs themselves.

While they lambast the Bulgarian government for failing to provide language courses or help the refugees find work, with winter closing in they said they cannot close the camp.

Volunteers have been the main driving force behind relief efforts for refugees, with Bulgaria woefully unprepared for the influx of Ukrainians following the invasion in late February.

Despite their efforts, some of the Russians helping Ukrainians are uncomfortable about admitting who they are. “I came up with this phrase, ‘I was born in Russia’,” a 47-year-old Russian translator, who lives in nearby Varna, told AFP.

“It was less painful for me to put it this way. I can’t describe this feeling of being ashamed of your motherland,” she told AFP, fearing giving her name in case it got her mother back home into trouble.

Having driven hundreds of kilometres to fetch people from the border with Romania, she is still putting up several families in her and her sister’s Airbnb apartments in Varna.

James, Davis carry Lakers past Pistons

DETROIT (AP) – LeBron James scored 35 points, Anthony Davis had 34 points and 15 rebounds and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Detroit Pistons 124-117 yesterday.

“This was a must-win for us, because we wanted to have a successful road trip – at least .500,” Davis said. “The last game is always the toughest to win.”

Davis also had seven assists as the Lakers overcame 38 points from Bojan Bogdanovic to end a three-game losing streak. Lonnie Walker IV added 18 points for Los Angeles and Russell Westbrook had 11 points and nine assists.

“LeBron really came in with a focus to finish the right way,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. “He was leading the charge and would not allow this game to get away from us.”

Rookie Jaden Ivey had 16 points for Detroit. The Pistons have lost three in a row.

“There are a lot of things you can’t control in a game – they came in shooting 28 per cent on threes and they shot 42 per cent tonight – but we have to get better at the other things,” Pistons coach Dwane Casey said.

“We can control boxing out and understanding rotations – we get caught up in the game and lose our focus.”

The Lakers led 61-49 at halftime, but Bogdanovic scored a career-high 25 points in the third quarter to pull the Pistons back into the game. With Davis scoring 17 points in the quarter, the Lakers took a 91-90 lead into the fourth.

“We fought all night long, but I think we had too many mistakes in the first half,” Bogdanovic said. “We must have given them 10 easy back-door layups and dunks, and that breaks your defence.”

Alec Burks scored to pull Detroit to 119-115 with a minute left, and Bogdanovic’s layup made it 119-117 with 35 seconds to play.

James, who had 13 points in the fourth, ran down the clock, drove down the lane and flipped to an open Austin Reaves for a baseline three-pointer with 12.4 seconds to play.

“When you are playing with him, you know he’s always going to make the right basketball play,” Reaves said.

“Knowing he has the confidence in me to take that shot builds my confidence.”

Man charged for burning flat with cigarette

CNA – A man was charged in Singapore yesterday with causing a fire by dropping a lit cigarette on a floor that had kerosene on it.

Loh Fu Wah, 63, was handed one count of negligently causing a fire at Block 941, Tampines Avenue 5, on January 28 this year.

He is accused of dropping a lit cigarette on the floor of a bedroom, when there was kerosene on the floor, the charge sheet said. The ensuing fire damaged the 10th-floor flat and the common corridor along the entrance of the unit.

According to a Facebook post by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) on January 29, firefighters responded to the incident and found the fire raging when they arrived.

The fire had “totally engulfed a two-storey unit on the 10th floor”, said SCDF.

Firefighters forced their way into the bedroom and found a man lying unconscious on the floor. They rescued him from the unit and he was taken to Changi General Hospital.

About 180 people from neighbouring units were evacuated.

Loh intends to plead guilty and will return to court next month to do so. If convicted of negligently causing a fire, he can be jailed for up to 18 months, fined, or both.

Four children ‘critical’ in hospital as UK hit by Arctic weather

LONDON (AFP) – Four children were fighting for their lives yesterday, after being pulled from an icy lake as an Arctic blast sent temperatures tumbling across the United Kingdom (UK).

The youngsters were reported to have been playing on frozen ice near Birmingham, central England, on Sunday afternoon, when it gave way and they fell in.

Emergency services said the children went into cardiac arrest when they were rescued and were taken to hospital in a critical condition.

The incident came as the UK was hit by heavy snow and freezing conditions, causing major travel disruption, on the eve of a national rail strike today that was already expected to bring the country to a grinding halt.

London Stansted airport warned of disruption.

“Our runway is temporarily closed whilst we undertake snow clearing,” it added, with many flights cancelled early yesterday.

The airport is a main hub of budget airline Ryanair, which also cautioned about disruption to its flights at Gatwick, south of London.

“Due to ongoing severe snowy weather across the UK, runaways at both Stansted and Gatwick have been temporarily closed tonight (11 December), disrupting all flights scheduled to depart Stansted/Gatwick during this temporary closure period,” it said.

Both airports were open yesterday, but passengers were told to brace for delays. Dozens of stranded passengers posted videos on social media showing snow-covered runways and planes stuck on the ground.

More than 50 flights were also cancelled on Sunday at Heathrow, the UK’s largest airport, due to freezing fog.

Train and bus services in London were also severely affected after the dump of around 10 centimetres of snow overnight, which also forced the closure of parts of the M25 orbital route around the capital, the country’s busiest motorway. Some schools were also shut.

The UK has been experiencing a cold snap for several days, with temperatures dropping to minus 10 Celsius degrees in some areas, although the Met Office said the temperatures were “not unusual for this time of year”.

The service has issued yellow alerts for snow, fog and frost in several areas, including southeast and southwest England, and the north of Scotland.

        Grime no more

        Jeanne Huber

THE WASHINGTON POST – It’s tedious to clean greasy kitchen cabinets without harming them, especially of the wood veneer type. Most would just wipe them with soap, but that doesn’t seem to cut through grease.

Greasy residues are inevitable in any kitchen used for cooking rather than reheating ready-made meals. But removing the grime without damaging the cabinets can be tricky, partly because you aren’t usually trying to clean the wood itself.

Unless the finish has worn through, which sometimes happens around doorknobs or drawer pulls, the grease is on the finish.

But what type of finish do you have? Some cabinets with a natural-wood look have a traditional oil finish, such as tung or linseed. Most, though, have a clear coating, often over a stain. It might be alkyd varnish, polyurethane, lacquer, acrylic, conversion varnish or something else.

Margaret Novak, who, with her family, runs a Furniture Medic business in Virginia (restorefurniture.net) that occasionally takes on kitchen cabinet cleaning jobs, said the first step is ensuring the finish is intact. Pick a grimy place and scrape it with a fingernail, she said. “If you scrape and the finish comes off down to bare wood, you know cleaning will pull the finish off.” Forgo deep-cleaning unless you’re prepared to refinish the cabinets.

But if all appears well, prepare a cleaning solution. Soap is one option, but Christopher Brazie, technical services specialist in Sherwin-Williams Co’s industrial wood coatings division, said it’s “one of the worst” options. Because it’s difficult to thoroughly rinse a cabinet door or drawer after cleaning, an oil soap will probably leave an oily residue on the wood. “That works as a magnet for dirt,” he said, and you’ll need to clean much more frequently.

Instead, he recommended using a clear detergent made for hand-washing dishes.

Dilute whatever cleaner you use; for LA’s, use a quarter cup of cleaner to two-and-a-half cups water. Dawn recommended adding a few drops of detergent to a bowl of warm water for general cabinet cleaning. For stubborn areas, it says to squirt detergent directly onto a sponge or cloth while holding it under running warm water. Test the cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area before you commit to cleaning everything. Let the area dry, and inspect it under a bright light to ensure you didn’t change the cabinet’s sheen or colour.

Using warm water with the cleaner helps, because heat softens grease. But don’t make the water too hot, and be careful if you’re cleaning wood veneer. Heat and water can soften the adhesive used to attach veneer, and moisture can permanently distort particleboard, which is often used as a base for veneer.

Use a clean cloth or sponge to spread the cleaning solution. An old toothbrush can help get into corners. Avoid soaking the surface. Instead, clean only a small area at a time, and wring out the sponge or cloth before you wipe.

Immediately rinse off the cleaner and the gunk it loosened by going over the area with a fresh cloth or sponge moistened with water. Dry the area with a clean, soft cloth before you tackle the next area. Microfibre cloths or old terry-cloth towels work well, because they can pick up and trap a lot of moisture.

If these steps still leave dirty areas, you might want to repeat the cleaning. Novak recommended waiting for the area to dry thoroughly between cleanings, though, as insurance against introducing so much water that it soaks through the surface.

Be sure to clean the high-touch areas of cabinets frequently, Brazie said. In most kitchens, that means the front of the silverware drawer and the doors on cabinets that store glasses and plates. The beauty of using only a mild soap that’s pH-balanced – as hand-dishwashing detergents typically are to protect skin – is that it’s “multigenerational”, meaning it should work and not do damage whether you have cabinets that are 50 years old and coated with shellac or just a few years old and finished with the latest high-tech coating.

Some people recommend cleaning cabinets with mineral spirits to remove remaining grease. This is fine on most cabinet finishes, but mineral spirits can leave an oily residue, creating the same issues as oil soap, Brazie said. He doesn’t recommend it.

Even after this two-step cleaning, areas around knobs and pulls may still look dull or different from surrounding wood. Cleaning can’t fix these problems, but careful touch-ups can.
