Brunei ranks second in Southeast Asia’s obesity struggle.

Brunei Darussalam has the second highest obese population in Southeast Asia with 14.1 per cent with an average body mass index (BMI) of 27.0 kilogrammes per quare metre (kg/m2) based on the World Population Review 2023.

However, the number of obese people in the country is not high compared to countries in Europe and North America. Malaysia topped the chart with 15.6 per cent.

The prevalence of obesity in the Sultanate is increasing due to factors such as changes in diet and lifestyle, as well as the rise of sedentary jobs. The government implemented measures such as promoting healthy eating habits and physical activity.
