‘From UNISSA, for GAZA’, a fundraising programme for the Palestinian people in Gaza, was held in conjunction with the Day of Action 2024, organised by the Co-Curriculum Unit of the Centre for Promotion of Knowledge and Language in collaboration with Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali’s (UNISSA) Al-Qudwah Group.
As an Islamic university, it makes sense for UNISSA to be a platform to celebrate public solidarity while helping them understand the issues surrounding Palestine from authentic sources, said the university.
The programme is open to the public. Funds collected will be channelled to the National Humanitarian Fund for Palestinians in Gaza.
According to UNISSA, “one of the goals of the programme is to spread awareness and understanding about humanitarian issues in Palestine as well as foster entrepreneurial elements for students to sell while doing charity and as a platform for students to create and be creative while performing community service”.
Rector of UNISSA Dr Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal was the guest of honour at the event, where students and lecturers set up exhibitions and vendors.
A motivational talk was held in the auditorium, ‘Reflection on Palestine, Count your blessings’, by UNISSA lecturers including, Dr Kamaru Salam bin Yusof, Dr Hajah Rafizah binti Haji Abdullah and Dr Hajah Nur Annisa binti Haji Sarbini with Head of Communication and Information Unit, Halalan Thayyiban Student Society 2023/2024 and Ahmad Amani Rusyaidi bin Ramli as the moderator.
The programme continued with performances such as a Tarannum Al-Quran reading, dikir, tausyeh, nasyid, speech, hadrah and sketches about Palestine by the students.
There was also a talk on ‘Understanding the situation in Palestine; reflections on gratitude in Brunei Darussalam’ by Master’s degree student from the Syafi’e School of Education Ahmad Ahyad bin Haji Amynoor and PhD student from Gaza Jehad Mhanna with Dr Siti Rashidah Hannani binti Pengiran Dr Haji Mohd Khairol Asmiee as the moderator. – Azlan Othman
