Students should be given more opportunities to learn through fun-filled experiences outside of the classroom, said Centre for British Teachers (CfBT) teacher Zia Ul Haq at the Pengiran Setia Jaya Pengiran Abdul Momin Primary School.
Zia Ul Haq said this during an event held for over 161 students in the Belait District as part of World Book Day at the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) Kampong Pandan Library yesterday.
Haq added, “I’m feeling positive about this event and I hope that it continues not only as a yearly activity, but one that is conducted more frequently” as it would help to grow the students’ imagination and character, while also instilling a culture of reading not only in school but in everyday life.
The event, part of the nationwide programme, saw a 10-minute silent reading session and a storytelling activity led by one of the library staff members, retelling the classic folktale of Jack and the Beanstalk.
Other activities included finger gym and quizzes, with the latter rewarding students with prizes from the library.
Similarly, Mohamad Sawarli bin Abdullah who is a teacher at the PGGMB School, shared how the activities created an inspiring and conducive environment for students to grow and learn through reading. – Daniel Lim
