Galactic payday for Boba Fett

UPI – A prototype Boba Fett action figure from Kenner’s 1979 Star Wars line has sold for a record-breaking USD1,342,000.

Goldin Auctions announced that the Kenner 1979 J-Slot (Version 2) Rocket-Firing (Mailer) Prototype Boba Fett, which never made it to market, is now the most expensive toy, action figure and non-prop Star Wars-related item ever sold.

The auction house revealed that only 30 of these prototypes were ever produced, with this particular figure being the highest-graded of the three known to still exist and the first of its kind to be sold at auction.

The toy was designed in 1979 but was never released due to safety concerns regarding its rocket-firing feature, which posed a risk of injury to children.

In June, a similar Boba Fett figure set the previous record for the most expensive vintage toy, selling for USD525,000. That figure was one of 70 prototypes made with an ‘L-slot’ firing mechanism, while the recently auctioned Boba Fett is the first ‘J-slot’ version to ever appear at auction.

“This item is regarded as one of the most significant in the hobby,” said Goldin founder and Chief Executive Officer Ken Goldin. “This is the first time a Mailer J-Slot V2/Missile example has come up for auction, making it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own this iconic piece of the Star Wars franchise.”
