Young innovators recognised for ground-breaking projects

Dasindu Sithmira Mahabodhi of Sivali Central College, Rathnapura, secured second place in the Junior category for his innovative project that optimises computer resource usage, enabling low-spec hardware to support advanced gaming features during the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards 2024 in Brunei from December 4-7.

Meanwhile, Sineth Daham Bandara Jayasundera from Gateway College, Colombo, received a merit award in the Senior category for his neural network-based solution to reduce electrical power wastage.

Ramiru Thehan Wijayasiriwardhane of Ananda College, Colombo, earned a merit award for his IoT-powered automatic watering system, which conserves water by analysing soil moisture and weather data.

Thisath Damiru Abeywickrama of St Joseph’s College, Anuradhapura, also participated, showcasing Sri Lanka’s growing strength in information and communication technology (ICT) innovation.

Competing against participants from 17 Asia-Pacific countries, the three Sri Lankan students were recognised for their outstanding technological projects.

The students’ journey began with the Young Computer Scientist (YCS) 2024 Competition, organised by the Federation of Information Technology (Guarantee) Ltd (FITIS) and supported by the Ministry of Education. The programme nurtures young ICT talent by encouraging innovative solutions to real-world problems. FITIS, Sri Lanka’s leading ICT industry body, played a crucial role in guiding these students to international success.

FITIS leaders, including Chairman Indika De Zoysa and Vice Chairman Dr Dayan Rajapakse, praised the students for their achievements and reaffirmed the importance of initiatives like YCS in developing the country’s digital economy.

These accomplishments not only highlight the individual talents of these students but also emphasise the potential of Sri Lanka’s youth in the global ICT arena. Their success underscores the importance of investing in technology education and providing platforms for young innovators to excel.

With programmes like YCS and continued support for ICT initiatives, Sri Lanka is paving the way for the next generation of tech leaders to make a global impact.
