Violations found during spot checks

Ten units of weighing and measuring machines used at festive stalls during His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 77th birthday celebration were found to have violated Chapter 151 of the Weights and Measures Act 1983, according to the authorities.

Equipment owners were issued with a notice and are required to rectify the issue within three working days.

The violations were uncovered during spot checks by the Industry and Business Ecosystem Division (IBE) through the Weights and Measures Unit (SDT), the Ministry of Finance and Economy in two locations – the open area opposite the Royal Regalia Museum building and Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien on Monday; and at the open area opposite the Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah Hospital, Tutong on Thursday.

According to a SDT statement, officers found 16 units of weighing and measuring machines used for trading purposes during the inspections.

As stipulated in Section 3(2) Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations 1994, every person “who uses or has in possession for use for trade any weight, measure or instrument for weighing not stamped as required by the regulation shall be guilty of an offence”.

The penalty for the offence is a BND1,000 fine or three months imprisonment or both, and the instrument forfeited while any contract, bargain, sale or dealing made by such weight, measure or instrument for weighing will be void. – James Kon
