Using technology to fight climate change

Climate change is one of the most significant challenges today and geographical information system (GIS) technology provides a crucial toolset to understand, analyse, and respond to its impacts, said Network Integrity Assurance Technologies Sdn Bhd (NiAT) Head of Commercial Wong Teck Sion.

He said GIS technology serves as a bridge between geographical data and environmental understanding.

“By capturing, managing, analysing, and visualising geospatial data, GIS provides a comprehensive view of our planet’s complex interconnected systems.

“With insights gained from GIS technology, we can pinpoint areas most vulnerable to change and develop targeted strategies for adaptation and mitigation to reduce climate-related disaster risks,” Wong said.

The Head of Commercial was speaking at ‘Observe: Harnessing Geospatial Intelligence for Climate Change’ seminar hosted by the company at Brunei Innovation Lab in Kampong Anggerek Desa held in conjunction with Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition 2023 (Brunei MYCE 2023).

The Head of Commercial also noted NiAT’s excitement to provide participants a platform to unlock the potential of GIS in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

The talk also saw NiAT GIS engineer Emily Yong Pey Pey and sales engineer Faiz Ya’akub giving presentations.

Among the topics covered include monitoring greenhouse emission using satellite remote sensing data, the use of GIS for climate action and strategies for disaster management. – Izah Azahari
