Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) Vice-Chancellor Datin Paduka Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman encouraged students and the faculty to make the most of the book donation from the Philippines Embassy to Brunei Darussalam. These books have been added to the university’s book corner.
“Let this be an invitation to explore new perspectives, deepen your understanding of our regional neighbours and cherish the bonds we share,” said the vice-chancellor during her welcoming remarks at the book donation ceremony yesterday.
The ceremony, at the UTB Library Complex, commemorated the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Brunei Darussalam and the Philippines, highlighting the strong cultural and educational ties between the two nations.
After the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat, Datin Paduka Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah delivered her welcoming remarks, followed by an address from Philippines Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Marian Jocelyn R Tirol-Ignacio.
The vice-chancellor expressed gratitude for the donation of over 50 books covering various subjects, including history, culture, travel, architecture and art.
She believes that these books will enrich the learning experience of students, faculty and the wider community, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Philippines’ rich heritage.
“This thoughtful contribution reflects the embassy’s commitment to strengthening educational ties and the close bond of friendship between our two nations,” she added. Datin Paduka Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah noted that the 40-year relationship between the two countries has been characterised by mutual respect, collaboration and goodwill, as both nations work together in the spirit of ASEAN.
Ambassador Tirol-Ignacio emphasised the importance of fostering multicultural awareness, understanding and appreciation to promote unity within ASEAN and beyond. She expressed hope that ‘The Philippines Corner’ would serve as a cultural bridge, enabling Bruneians to explore Filipino heritage and advancing efforts to enhance ASEAN awareness.
The highlight of the event was the official launch of ‘The Philippines Corner’, marked by the handover of books by the ambassador to the vice-chancellor. The curated collection includes books on Philippine history, culture, literature and environmental studies, offering the UTB community an opportunity to delve into the rich heritage of the Philippines.
The initiative reinforces the friendship between the two nations, reaffirming shared values of cultural appreciation, knowledge exchange and regional solidarity.
