Two students off to Singapore for science forum

Two students and an education officer will participate in the 15th International Science Youth Forum (ISYF) 2023 at Hwa Chong Institution, Singapore.

A Pre-U student from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College Awangku Mohammad Raihaan Zeyad bin Pengiran Haji Mohammad Amirul Sani, and a Year 12 student from Jerudong International School (JIS) Awangku Muhammad Asfer Nazif Iman bin Pengiran Asmali will represent the country in the forum.

Accompanying them is a teacher from Lambak Kiri Secondary School, Muhammad Fauzan bin Awang Damit.

Awangku Muhammad Asfer Nazif Iman shared that they feel incredibly fortunate and immensely grateful towards the government, Ministry of Education (MoE) specifically the Centre for the Development of Gifted and Talented Education (EDGE), for granting them an opportunity to expand their horizon and enhance their knowledge through the ISYF 2023.

“This has affirmed His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the government’s dedication towards Brunei Vision 2035 in propelling Brunei onto the global stage and building a more forward-minded generation that is going to bring this nation success in years to come,” added the student. The initiative is coordinated by the Ministry of Education through its EDGE and the forum, organised by Hwa Chong Institution (College Section) is supported by the Ministry of Education of Singapore.

Head of the EDGE Centre Dr Mona Aliana binti Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mohd Alimin saw the delegates off at the Brunei International Airport yesterday.

The forum themed ‘Reconnect, Reimagining: Looking Ahead to a Better World’, is an annual forum aiming to provide a platform for students between the ages of 16 and 17 to interact with Nobel Laureates and leading scientists in the field of science.

At the forum, participants will have the opportunity to participate in activities such as Team Project Challenge, Amazing Tour, Dialogues and Masterclass Sessions, Cultural Hour and Exhibition as well as a Poster Exhibition.

The delegates will also share their project proposal titled ‘Rubbish Reward System’ during the Poster Exhibition session.

The forum also aims to enrich and enhance teachers’ paedagogical competencies through discussions as well as sharing ideas and professional practices among teachers from other participating countries, as well as establish contact for future collaborations in education.

During the teacher’s sharing session, Muhammad Fauzan will present on ‘Teaching in times of COVID: A retrospective’.
