While grabbing food for sungkai the other day at a Gerai Ramadhan in the capital, I noticed that several vendors were still using plastic bags.
This was disappointing, considering our country’s ongoing efforts to reduce plastic waste through the No Plastic Bag Everyday initiative, which was introduced several years ago.
Personally, I have made it a habit to bring my own reusable bag whenever I go out. Even at the Gerai Ramadhan, I brought my own containers for takeaways and politely refused plastic bags when offered. It is disheartening to see the progress we’ve made with the No Plastic Bag Everyday initiative undermined by the widespread use of plastic bags at the market.
Stronger enforcement and greater awareness are needed to ensure that sustainable habits take root, especially in spaces where single-use plastics are still prevalent.
