Two foreign workers arrested for labour offences

The Law Enforcement Division of the Labour Department arrested two foreign workers while conducting Operasi Siaga 15/2024 targeting areas in Bandar Seri Begawan on January 21.

The workers were arrested during the inspection of their job specifications which stated them working under labour but they were found to be working as ‘teksi sapu’ (illegal taxis).

This is a violation under Section 112 (2) of the Employment Order 2009, violating the foreign workers license.

For violations under Section 112(2) of the Employment Order 2009, if found guilty, employers may be fined not less than BND6,000 and not more than BND10,000, given an imprisonment sentence for a period of not less than six months and not more than three years or both.

The Labour Department reminded employers to monitor their employees’ welfare and ensure it is in line with the Employment Order 2009 which includes providing employment contracts and paying salaries on time. Employers were also reminded not to abuse their foreign worker license.

The public can contact the Labour Department at 2381848 (working hours) or 7298989 (outside of working hours) for more information. – Rokiah Mahmud
