Pokémon is experiencing an exciting revival in the mobile gaming world, led by two standout titles: the augmented reality favourite Pokémon GO and the recently launched Pokémon TCG Pocket.

Together, these apps have reignited fans’ passion for the franchise, introducing exciting and innovating gameplay mechanics with enough doses of nostalgia that keeps players coming back for more.

DYNAMAX BATTLES BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO POKÉMON GO

The introduction of Dynamax and Gigantamax raids has revolutionised Pokémon GO’s gameplay, offering epic battles that test both strategy and teamwork. In Max Battles, players utilise Max Particles to challenge Dynamax Pokémon at Power Spots, which rotate across the map and are distinct from gyms.

Accessing Max Battles requires reaching Trainer Level 13 and unlocking the “To the Max” Special Research. These battles have quickly become a standout feature, encouraging players to explore their surroundings and collaborate to take down colossal foes.

For those seeking an even greater challenge, Pokémon GO, developed by Niantic, Inc also features Gigantamax Max Battles. These six-star encounters pit players against Gigantamax Pokémon and are not for the faint-hearted, demanding up to 40 players, split into multiple groups, to succeed.

Victory comes with the chance to catch a Pokémon capable of Gigantamaxing – a formidable addition to any roster.

I’ve found myself tumbling headfirst into the Pokémon GO rabbit hole, especially as someone who initially played it to supplement my fitness journey. A quick Facebook search led me to a local community of dedicated PoGo-ers who keep each other updated through social media groups.

Before I knew it, I was participating in event hours, spotlight hours, raid hours, and research hours, raiding alongside fellow players. My friend list grew from a modest 11 to over 50 in just a few months. Of course, gifting has become a bit of a logistical nightmare, and coordination isn’t without its teething problems, but it all feels worthwhile.

There’s something undeniably satisfying about battling together, forging friendships and sharing in the triumph of victory.

A NEW TAKE ON THE POKÉMON TRADING CARD GAME

Launched globally in October 2024, Pokémon TCG Pocket, developed by Creatures Inc and DeNA, on the other hand offers a streamlined version of the classic Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG), adapted for mobile devices.

Decks are simplified to 20 cards focused on a single elemental type, with energy automatically allocated each turn, and the Prize Card mechanic replaced with knockout points.

The result is fast-paced matches that retain the strategic depth of the original game. The experience of opening digital booster packs – a highlight of the game – is drawing in players, especially those with fond memories of the classic TCG.

“When I first played Pocket, I didn’t know what to expect,” said our Multimedia Production Executive, Adib Noor.

“I was attracted to the sense of nostalgia, opening up Pokémon packs like I used to back in the day.”

After the initial rush of spending free tokens to unlock packs, many players, like Adib, find themselves diving deeper into the gameplay itself.

“I began to appreciate other aspects of the game – like the card game itself. After all these years, thanks to Pocket, I actually know or understand how to play the Pokémon card game. Winning battle after battle was addictive. Right until you face a deck you can’t beat.”

As players progress, the game introduces layers of complexity, encouraging them to refine their strategies and build better decks.

“The more you understand the game, the more technical you get. And I was surprised that this is what got me interested in the game,” he shared.

Even when the gameplay feels routine, Pocket has a knack for pulling players back with fresh content. Whether through new cards, special events, or the chance to experiment with updated strategies, the app ensures there’s always something new to explore.

What makes this moment especially exciting is the interplay between Pokémon GO and Pokémon TCG Pocket.

Nostalgia ties them together, with Pocket rekindling memories of the TCG and inspiring players to revisit GO. Conversely, GO veterans are trying out Pocket to discover a new facet of their Pokémon journey.

Both games are thriving, feeding off each other’s player bases and offering unique yet complementary experiences.

Whether you’re strategising for Dynamax battles in Pokémon GO or crafting the ultimate deck in Pokémon TCG Pocket, this is an extraordinary time to be immersed in the Pokémon universe.

It highlights the enduring strength of the Pokémon IP and its timeless appeal, seamlessly bridging the franchise’s past and future with every new game, battle, card pack, and raid. Whether you’re reliving cherished childhood memories or discovering the world of Pokémon for the first time, there’s no better moment to dive in. – Wardi Wasil
