In a celebration of Malay heritage and a commitment to preserving the art of Jawi writing, Kolej Universiti Perguruan Ugama Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) held a Jawi Signature Writing Contest for primary students from across Brunei on Monday.
Organised by the college’s Centre for Jawi Studies and Traditional Islamic Manuscripts, the event aimed to cultivate students’ appreciation for Jawi script while enhancing their cultural pride and sense of identity.
Presiding over the event at the Dewan Tarbiah, KUPU SB, was the Guest of Honour, Associate Professor Ra’es of KUPU SB Dr Abdul Nasir bin Haji Abdul Rani.
After a competitive selection, the top ten entries were chosen to compete in a spontaneous final round, where Nur Hazarena Alyna binti Abdullah from Awang Haji Mohd Yusof Primary School, Katimahar, secured first place. Second and third places went to Md Khaleel Shareef bin Md Sahril Rizuan from Kampong Mata-Mata Gadong Primary School and Muhammad Adam bin Nayan from Puni Primary School, Temburong, respectively.
In her welcoming speech, Director of the Centre for Jawi Studies and Traditional Islamic Manuscripts Pengiran Dr Hajah Norwidayawati binti Pengiran Haji Metusin, highlighted that the competition’s objectives were not only to raise awareness and interest in Jawi script but also to enhance students’ skills in crafting their own signatures in Jawi, fostering self-confidence and Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) values.
During the official opening, Associate Professor Dr Abdul Nasir emphasised the significance of introducing students to Jawi early on, stating, “This competition serves not only as an introduction to the Jawi script but as a way to inspire a deeper appreciation and lifelong commitment to preserving this art form within our youth.” – FADLEY FAISAL
