Students learn marine conservation

Secondary students from St Andrew’s School recently completed a marine conservation programme focused on coral reefs.

The Reef Ball Express Gardener programme, conducted by LAUT Brunei and the Poni Foundation, comprises two components: Reef Ball Fabrication and Reef Ball Discovery.

Fabrication segment focuses on the hands-on creation of reef structures, while the Reef Ball Discovery segment emphasises the exploration and understanding of reef ecosystems.

For their discovery segment, students travelled to Pelong Rock to witness the deployment of the 12 reef balls. In the boats, they learnt how to plant coral plugs onto the reef balls, which will provide a vital substrate for coral growth and help restore marine habitats.

After 72 coral plugs were planted, the students had the opportunity to snorkel and observe the reef balls, allowing them to experience the marine environment and see the impact of their conservation efforts firsthand.

The programme was conducted under the SC Tubular Solutions (B) Sdn Bhd School programme, which aims to hold school talks, training and engaging local students in reef conservation.
