Strong Brunei-Oman bilateral ties highlighted

The Sultanate of Oman commemorated its 54th National Day at a reception at the Royal Berkshire Hall, Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club, Jerudong, on Thursday evening.

The event, graced by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Nazmi bin Haji Awang Mohamad, and his spouse, Datin Dayang Hajah Binanun binti Haji Bungsu, highlighted the enduring bilateral relations between Oman and Brunei.

The evening began with a recitation of the Al-Quran.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Oman to Brunei Darussalam Erma Said Mohamed Samhan Al Kathiry, delivered welcoming remarks, underscoring the theme of harmony as the cornerstone of Oman’s identity and its foreign policy. She expressed gratitude for the strong diplomatic ties between the two Sultanates, which celebrate 40 years of friendship this year.

“Today’s occasion offers an opportunity to reflect on Oman’s achievements—from our rich history to the Renaissance of 1970 and the progress of recent years,” she stated. The Ambassador also emphasised Oman’s commitment to peace, sustainable development, and global cooperation.

The reception included a ceremonial cake-cutting, joined by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Ambassadors accredited to Brunei, and a presentation of a souvenir and bouquet to the Guest of Honour and his spouse.

A short documentary film was screened, showcasing Oman’s achievements and milestones. 

In her speech, the Ambassador highlighted key areas of Oman-Brunei cooperation, including annual bilateral meetings, economic collaborations led by the Oman-Brunei Investment Company, cultural exchanges, and educational partnerships. She noted that the Oman-Brunei Joint Committee and other mechanisms have significantly advanced ties across various sectors.

On energy cooperation, the Ambassador highlighted agreements between Brunei and Oman’s leading energy companies, while reaffirming Oman’s leadership in green energy initiatives and its commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The Ambassador also reiterated Oman’s stance on global issues, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and greater international action against injustices. – FADLEY FAISAL
