SINGAPORE (Bernama) – Singapore will cease registration of new diesel cars and taxis on Jan 1, 2025, aligning with its goal for cleaner energy vehicles by 2040.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced that existing diesel cars registered before January 1, 2025, can still renew their Certificate of Entitlement, but they will face increased road taxes as a disincentive to discourage renewal.
“Starting from Jan 1, 2025, new diesel car and taxi registrations will no longer be allowed.
“With cleaner energy alternatives now widely available, the proportion of new diesel car and taxi registrations has remained below one per cent since 2021,” the agency said in a statement, Tuesday.
The matter was first announced at a Parliament session in March 2021.
However, these restrictions will not apply to the import and registration of cars under the Classic Vehicle Scheme and Vintage Vehicle Scheme.
