Signing ceremony marks new chapter for scholars

Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd hosted a Scholarship Signing Ceremony for 15 scholars under the Joint Scholarship Programme, a collaborative initiative between Hengyi Industries, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), and Zhejiang University (ZJU).

The ceremony commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat, followed by a speech from Hengyi Industries Deputy Chief Executive Officer Xu Ye.

The event saw 15 UBD scholars sign the scholarship agreement, with Xu Ye and Deputy Minister (Energy) at the Prime Minister’s Office Dato Seri Paduka Haji Mohamad Azmi bin Haji Mohd Hanifah, the guest of honour, serving as witnesses, marking the beginning of their academic journey abroad.

The event continued with a guided minibus tour of Hengyi Industries, providing the scholars with a first-hand look at the company’s operations, before concluding with a group photo session.

This ceremony marked the 12th batch of UBD students pursuing a Bachelor of Chemical and Process Engineering to be awarded scholarships under the Joint Scholarship Programme – an initiative under Hengyi Future-Ready aimed at equipping Brunei’s youth with the skills and opportunities to become the next generation of highly skilled engineers.

As part of the programme, the scholars will continue their studies abroad at ZJU in Hangzhou, China, for 1.5 years, which will be funded by the scholarship.

Prior to this, the scholars completed their 1.5 years of academic studies at UBD. Upon their return, they will complete their final year at UBD before undertaking a six-month internship with Hengyi Industries. Hengyi Industries will offer students under the programme the opportunity for full-time employment after the completion of their studies.

Since its establishment in March 2014, the scholarship programme has awarded a total of 202 scholarships to UBD students. To date, 112 scholars have completed their studies and are currently employed at Hengyi Industries.

Through this programme, Hengyi Industries remains committed to nurturing local talent and contributing to the national vision of developing educated, highly skilled, and accomplished individuals under Brunei Vision 2035.

UBD Vice-Chancellor Dr Hazri bin Haji Kifle and officials from the Chinese Embassy in Brunei Darussalam, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Education were also present.
