Some 80 senior citizens aged 60 and above, comprising 40 men and 40 women from across the nation gathered at the RPN Kampong Pandan Mosque to compete in the ‘National Al-Quran Memorisation and Its Understanding Competition’ yesterday.
Haji Brahim bin Haji Mohamad came in first in the men’s category with the final score of 91.6; followed by Haji Imran bin Haji Ibrahim and Haji Gapor bin Ahad in second and third place.
Meanwhile, Hajah Amidah binti Ghafar came first in the women’s category with a final score of 92.3; while Hajah Khairul Aini binti DP Haji Abdul Wahab and Hajah Ramlah binti Haji Abd Rahman were in second and third place. Organised by the Mosque Affairs Department through the Imarah Division and the RPN Kampong Pandan Mosque Takmir Committee, the competition was held in conjunction with the 78th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
It aims to help instil a culture and love for reading Al-Quran among the elderly while deepening their knowledge and faith.
The competition also serves to further encourage and inspire residents to attend religious activities at the mosque.
Acting Mosque Affairs Director Haji Amir Hisham bin Haji Masri, as the guest of honour, presented prizes and trophies to the winners. – Daniel Lim
