ANN/THE STAR – Sabah Police officers in Kota Kinabalu has successfully incapacitated four burglary gangs who took part in targeting safes in upmarket housing estates in Sabah and made off with MYR1.36 Million from January and February 2024. Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said the police believe they have solved 14 housebreaking cases with the arrest of 12 suspects. The groups would typically strike houses in elite residential areas, he added.
“Some of these groups get information that the occupants are away when piles of newspapers are left on the porch, for example. We hope occupants do not leave signs that they are not at home.
“Contact the police or register your movement in the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application so that police can monitor your house,” he said at a press conference after attending the state level 217th Police Day celebration yesterday. Jauteh also said Sabah recorded a 23.34 per cent increase in crime cases from January and February, with 782 cases compared to 634 cases in the same period last year.
He said the increase was partly due to the police’s approach to open investigation papers for all reports with criminal elements, regardless of the amount of losses involved.
However, he said the success rate of solving crimes also increased this year to 65.35 per cent.
