Regional geoscience secretariat committee makes courtesy visit to JKR

The Public Works Department (JKR), Ministry of Development (MoD), received a courtesy visit by a delegation from the Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia Technical Secretariat (CCOPTS) recently.

The delegation led by CCOPTS Director Dr Young Joo Lee aimed to introduce and promote the work scope of the Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP) and to strengthen the partnership and collaboration between the Sultanate and CCOP.

The delegation met JKR Acting Director General Haji Shaharuddin Khairul bin Haji Anuar and Acting Deputy Director General, as Permanent Representative from Brunei to CCOP, Ir Norazmi bin Othman.

Ir Norazmi expressed the aspiration to actively engage in CCOP activities, projects, and meetings with a focus on advancing geoscience research.

Dr Young Joo Lee highlighted his appreciation to the Sultanate for becoming a member country of the CCOP and making CCOP a complete platform to share information between East and Southeast Asia.

The delegates also visited the office of Geotechnical, Geological and Research Division specifically the National Seismic Centre and Construction Materials Testing Laboratory and Drainage Division, Department of Drainage and Sewerage to gain technical insight on coastal protection in Brunei.

The delegates also made a courtesy call on Acting Permanent Secretary (Planning, Land Use and Environment) at the MoD Aldila binti Haji Mohamad Salleh.

The itinerary also included visits to Universiti Brunei Darussalam and Universiti Teknologi Brunei.

During the visit Dr Young Joo Lee shared information regarding CCOP’s activities and discussed potential educational and industrial collaborations in the future.

On June 24, 2020, Brunei Darussalam was accepted as a member of CCOP during the 74th CCOP Steering Committee Virtual Meeting. The country has since been actively involved with the CCOP, such as sharing knowledge regarding the latest advancements in geosciences through activities including training and capacity building programmes, projects and meetings.
