Prison warden pleads guilty to corruption charges

A prison warden, aged 33, has pleaded guilty to two offences under Section 6(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Chapter 131 in the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Firdaus bin Mohammad revealed that Mohammad Azizan bin Liusin, assigned to Maraburong Prison, had facilitated unauthorised communication between a prisoner and individuals outside the prison. The communications, conducted through letters, were made without the necessary permission from the Officer-in-Charge of the Prisons Department. Investigations by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) further unearthed that in exchange for his actions, Mohammad Azizan corruptly accepted gratifications amounting to BND600 on November 30, 2020 and BND50 on December 3, 2020.

Acting Senior Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid will be handing down sentence on January 2.

The ACB emphasized the importance of integrity among public servants, reminding them not to abuse their positions or engage in corrupt practices. The bureau reiterated that corruption is a serious offence, carrying a penalty of up to BND30,000 in fines and seven years’ imprisonment upon conviction. – Fadley Faisal
