ASEAN can deal with drug threat by working collectively

Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Hajah Safiah binti Sheikh Haji Abdul Salam said by working collectively, sharing best practices and a strong legal framework, ASEAN will be able to effectively deal with the threat of dangerous drugs and protect the citizens’ well-being.

She said this when LegCo members attended the 6th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Advisory Council on Dangerous Drugs (AIPACODD) meeting in Bogor, Indonesia from May 29 to June 1.

The meeting, attended by over 25 Members of Parliament from the AIPA, saw the presentation of a country report on the current situation of trafficking and drugs, national laws and policies, law enforcement, regional and international cooperation, as well as other actions taken to combat drugs and their trafficking.

The meeting also discussed a draft resolution titled ‘Supporting Inclusive Economic Growth for Drug-Free ASEAN’.

Yang Berhormat Hajah Safiah and Yang Berhormat Haji Mohd Salleh bin Haji Othman led the Brunei delegation.

At the last session of the meeting, a draft resolution on ‘Supporting Inclusive Economic Growth for Drug-Free ASEAN’ was agreed to be presented during the 44th AIPA General Assembly in August.

Balance between economic growth, social development and environmental protection important, says LegCo member

Brunei recognises the need to achieve a balance between economic growth, social development and environmental protection. And as such, the Sultanate has allocated BND2.1 million to fund the establishment of the ASEAN Climate Change Centre, which will serve as the region’s climate research body, Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Hajah Rosmawatty binti Haji Abdul Momin said.

She said this when LegCo members recently attended a forum between ASEAN inter-parliamentarians and South Korea in Jeju Island, South Korea.

The platform, from June 1-2, discussed two main issues: ASEAN-Korea cooperation for supply chain facilitation between Parliament and Business; and ASEAN-Korea Sustainable Cooperation on Climate Change – The role of Parliament and Business in the 18th Forum towards peace and prosperity that generate cooperation between ASEAN and South Korea to increase the exchange of best practices.

The LegCo members were led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Suyoi bin Haji Osman, who delivered a statement on the importance of maintaining and developing close relations between South Korea and ASEAN in ensuring the progress and economic growth of the two parties will not be hindered by the current conflict.

Students, lecturers in Japan for Islamic brotherhood programme

Two lecturers and 18 students of the Bachelor of Religious Education and Diploma in Religious Education programmes of Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) are currently attending the Rihlah Ilmiah programme in Osaka, Japan.

The programme, organised by the Fikrah Club under Faculty of Usuluddin, KUPU SB in collaboration with the Japan Da’wah Centre, ends tomorrow.

Lecturer and head of delegation Dayangku Hajah Norafizah binti Pengiran Haji Bungsu said the Rihlah Ilmiah programme aims to strengthen Islamic brotherhood between students of KUPU SB and Muslim converts in Osaka.

She added that the visit aims to broaden the students’ perspectives, enrich their experience and build intellectual relationships, particularly in Islamic preaching, through discussions and direct learning within the Muslim community in Japan, while promoting Brunei Darussalam as a Zikir nation based on the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) concept.

The delegation visited Kansai University in Osaka and presented waqaf to the mosque committee in Osaka.

Humanitarian fund receives donations

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) yesterday received two separate donations amounting to BND9,500 donation for Turkiye and Syria Earthquake Humanitarian Fund. The ceremony took place at Citra Budaya Hall of the MCYS building.

According to the Community Development Department under MCYS, the Group of Wives of Cabinet Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Deputy Permanent Secretaries and Affiliated Members donated BND3,500 handed over by Datin Fadzlin binti Hashim on behalf of the group.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Studies Department under the Ministry of Religious Affairs made a BND6,000 donation handed over by Acting Director of the Islamic Studies Department Hajah Mariana binti Haji Jamil. Acting Director of Community Development Department Fauziah binti Haji Mohd Salleh received the donations.

40 donors at fourth blood donation campaign

Forty staff members of VAM BRN Sdn Bhd participated in the company’s blood donation campaign yesterday. It was the fourth time the campaign had been organised by VAM BRN in collaboration with the Blood Donation Centre at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital.

The campaign aimed to replenish blood stocks at the Blood Donation Centre as well as encourage people to bleed for a good cause.

A group of Bruneians made a two-day trip to Bongawan, Sabah over the weekend to perform Maghrib and Isyak prayers and recited Tahlil for the late families of Abu Bakar Faakir at the Surau in Kampong Seladan.

A Zikir Marhaban was also held from family members of the late Abu Bakar Faakir from Sabah and Brunei Darussalam.

Belait association marks Filial Piety Day

The Foochow Association of Kuala Belait on Saturday celebrated Filial Piety Day as its annual activity to show appreciation for parents and the elderly.

Janet Sia, in her capacity as the organising chairperson, highlighted the importance of respecting parents and the elderly as they are the backbone of a family. “This celebration serves as an opportunity for us to appreciate and cherish the efforts made by our parents, the elderly and ancestors, and the time that we spend with them.”

The celebration was attended by association members and their family members.

Brunei win bronze at ASEAN Para Games

Brunei Darussalam collected their first medal at the 12th ASEAN Para Games after para athlete Shari bin Haji Jumaat bagged bronze in the men’s discus (F55) event at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Sunday.

The national para athlete managed a distance of 25.36 metres and broke the national record in the process as well as adding a new personal best.

Chef de Mission of the Brunei Darussalam national contingent Haji Ali Yusri bin Haji Abdul Ghafor presented gifts in the form of mascots to the winners in the men’s discus.

Indonesia’s Riadi Saputra won gold with a distance of 33.36 metres with Vietnam’s Kieu Minh Trung taking silver with 27.49 metres.

Five athletes competed in the event.

During the previous edition in the 11th ASEAN Para Games 2022 in Solo, Indonesia, Shari also won bronze in the same event.

Brunei-China relations hailed at ship reception

The People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Ship Qi Jiguang held a reception inviting personnel of the Royal Brunei Navy (RBN), Brunei government officials, ambassadors in Brunei Darussalam and prominent members of the Brunei Chinese Community.

Acting Fleet Commander of RBN Willie @ Mathias bin Padan represented the RBN.

The rear admiral said he is eager for an fruitful exchange with the RBN. The planned agenda includes training between the Qi Jiguang personnel and the RBN on June 8.

Meanwhile, the ambassador-designate, said that China and Brunei are each other’s close neighbours across the sea, trustworthy friends and partners of common development.

The two countries have set an example of harmonious co-existence and mutually beneficial and win-win interactions between countries of different sizes.

He added that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) proposed by China.

“The cooperation under the framework of BRI between China and Brunei has yielded fruitful results. The Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd and Muara Port have not only promoted the development of economic, trade and investment cooperation between the two countries, but also injected vitality to the economic development and diversification of Brunei as well as Brunei’s trade with other countries.

“We will take this opportunity to continuously promote the successful experiences, expand the exchanges and cooperation in various fields, upgrade the China-Brunei relations, and bring more tangible benefits to the two peoples.”

Digitalisation a key focus for efficiency
