Hovland beats McCarthy in playoff to win PGA Memorial

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Norway’s Viktor Hovland parred the first extra hole to defeat American Denny McCarthy in a playoff on Sunday to win the Memorial tournament for his fourth US PGA Tour title.

The 25-year-old from Oslo, a runner-up in last month’s PGA Championship, had not won on tour since the 2021 World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico.

Seventh-ranked Hovland, Sunday’s only player to birdie the 17th hole, and McCarthy, whose lone bogey came at 18, each fired a two-under par 70 to finish 72 holes on seven-under 281 at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.

In the playoff at the par-4 18th hole, McCarthy found the right rough and pitched into the fairway while Hovland reached the green in two. McCarthy missed a par putt from just inside 12 feet and Hovland sank a par putt from just inside seven feet for the trophy.

“I’ve been playing well. I’ve just been trying to stay within myself and play my own game.

Maybe before I would have fired at some pins I shouldn’t have fired at.

“I just played smart, played my game and came up clutch this time.”

Hovland contended late at the Masters before settling for a share of seventh and shared third at The Players Championship in March as well as his PGA runner-up effort, making the Memorial triumph that much sweeter.

“Feels even better after a few close calls the past few months,” he said. “It’s fun to win one of these without ball-striking it to death. Now I can rely on some other strengths as well.”

It was a gut-wrenching loss for McCarthy, who settled for his best PGA Tour result. He led down the final holes with clutch par putts only to bogey 18 in regulation and the playoff after missing the fairway off the tee.

“I battled really hard,” McCarthy said. “Heartbroken right now, but a lot of positives to take from this week. My putter kept me in it when I was a little shaky. Hit a lot of good golf shots this week.”

On a day when the average score soared above 75, top-ranked Scottie Scheffler – who made the cut on the number and began Sunday five strokes adrift – fired a 67 to finish third in 282, one shot out of the playoff.

Man jailed for firearm possession

Fadley Faisal

A 34-year-old local was sentenced yesterday to six years and six months’ jail with three whippings after he was found guilty of a charge for possessing two self-made rifles at home without licence. Deputy Public Prosecutor Raihan Nabilah binti Ahmad Ghazali produced 10 witnesses in proving the case against Norfazilah bin Abdul Rahman beyond reasonable doubt.

Senior Magistrate Azrimah binti Abdul Rahman did not find any “plausible explanation” for possessing the rifles in Norfazilah’s defence throughout the trial.

Evidence and testimonies that led to the court’s decision revealed that the defendant was arrested at his residence in Jalan Kecil Birau, Tutong.

It was a raid pursued by Narcotics Control Bureau officers on the morning of January 11, 2021. Instead of finding drugs, officers retrieved one self-made rifle from a car parked at the home compound as well as parts that made up another self-made rifle in a freezer at the back of the house.

The case was transferred to the Lamunin Police station, whose investigations in turn led to the prosecution framing the charge against Norfazilah.

He added, “Everything needs to be managed and handled efficiently. For that, it needs the support of experienced and knowledgeable human resources to serve with integrity with the support of advanced technology.”

The International Halalan Thayyiban Product and Services is open to the public until tomorrow.

It is important for established companies to serve as benchmarks of success and drive competitiveness in their respective industries. Their success inspires and sets standards for other businesses to strive for, creating a healthy competitive environment. The competition leads to continuous improvement, efficiency gains and higher quality products and services, all of which benefit the economy as a whole.

This was shared by Enterprise Development Director Norlela binti Suhailee at Darussalam Enterprise’s (DARe) launch of the Elevate Programme’s Cohort 3 at a networking event at The Garden’s Veranda, Rimba yesterday.

For the new cohort, she said, “Your participation in the programme and presence signify your commitment to growth, professional excellence and making a positive impact on Brunei’s business landscape.

“We encourage you to embrace the opportunity with enthusiasm, embrace the challenges that lie ahead, and savour every moment of the journey.

“While we understand that growth is not an overnight success, it is the collection of efforts, hard work and determination that will keep us on track in the journey and eventually help us achieve our growth objective.

“As you embark on this path, remember that you are not alone. You are with like-minded individuals, driven by the same desire for growth and excellence. Together, we will create a supportive network where ideas flourish and partnerships and friendships are formed.

Cherish the bonds and seize every opportunity to learn from one another. Remain open-minded and seek collaborations beyond the traditional.

“Our aim is to empower you and your businesses to become catalysts for growth and positive changes in your respective fields.”

Meanwhile, Elevate Manager Ilie Rahman delivered a presentation on Elevate, which provides tailored assistance and regular monitoring over five years for established companies that have high-growth potential.

The programme’s objective is to grow promising MSMEs to be more sustainable and resilient, capable of international expansion and collaboration.
