Online scam victims must report to authorities, says minister

It is crucial to combat scam immediately as they are different from traditional crimes, said Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha during the 20th session of the Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting yesterday.

He added that Cyber Security Brunei (CSB) has been operating since 2020 with function at the Cyber Watch Centre, the Brunei Computer Emergency Response Team (BruCERT) and the National Digital Forensics Laboratory (NDFL).

The minister was responding to a suggestion from LegCo member Yang Berhormat Chong Chin Yee to establish a national anti-scam centre to address online scams through collaborations with CSB and the Scams Task Force.

The minister also underlined the needs for victims of online scams to report either to BruCERT or the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), adding that several awareness programmes on the issue of scams and its reporting process have been conducted by several agencies.

He also noted that the digital forensic lab is essential in identifying the origins of online scams. – Rokiah Mahmud
