The Brunei Malayali Association celebrated the ‘Onam’ harvest festival at Pusat Insani in Seria on Sunday.
The celebration began with the singing of Brunei’s national anthem followed by the recitation of Doa Selamat.
Association president Sajeev Kumar, in his welcome speech, thanked His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the Brunei Government for supporting the association.
The association presented donations to the Belait District Orphans Fund and Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) Brunei.
The event showcased semi-classical, fusion, cinematic dances and singing performances by the community members.
Permanent Secretary (Sports) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud was the guest of honour.
Around 500 people attended the event. The programme concluded with a traditional vegetarian feast on banana leaves.
