BANGKOK (BERNAMA) – The Omicron BA.2 sub-variant is currently the dominant circulating COVID-19 variant in Thailand, accounting for about 52 per cent of the infections.
Director of the News Division of the Department of Information at Thailand’s Foreign Ministry Maratee Nalita Andamo said the BA.2 sub-variant appears to be more transmissible than the more common BA.1 sub-variant and it has replaced the BA.1 as the dominant sub-variant in the kingdom.
“According to the director-general of the Medical Sciences Department Dr Supakit Sirilak, the BA.2 sub-variant accounts for 51.8 per cent of Omicron cases while BA.1 accounts for 48.2 per cent of the infections,” she said at the COVID-19 daily briefing yesterday.
Data showed that the Omicron variant represents 99.6 per cent of all COVID-19 cases in Thailand.
Over the last 24 hours, Thailand recorded 22,984 new COVID-19 cases via RT-PCR tests and 74 deaths, bringing the total infections in the kingdom to 3,111,857 cases and 23,512 fatalities since the pandemic in 2020.
