Following reports regarding the release of Fukushima’s treated radioactive waste water into the Pacific Ocean starting on August 24, as announced by the Japanese authorities, the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) yesterday assured the public that no agricultural products and seafood products from Fukushima have been imported into the Sultanate.
The MPRT also noted that the release has received approval from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and is under control.
The radiation content is also far lower than the safe level outlined by the IAEA, it added.
The MPRT, in collaboration with the Brunei Darussalam Food Authority (BDFA), is actively monitoring food supply sources imported from abroad, including Japan, to ensure food quality and safety.
This includes requiring that all agricultural produce and seafood products imported to be accompanied by a health certificate or phytosanitary certificate or Radioactive Material Analysis Report recognised by the authority of the exporting country and comply with the conditions of the import permit issued by the authority in the Sultanate. – Azlan Othman
