Nearly 200 imams appointed for Ramadhan tarawih prayers

Almost 200 people have been appointed as imams to lead Sunnat Tarawih prayers during Ramadhan during a ceremony at Ash-Shalilheen Mosque yesterday.

Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary (Administration and Finance) at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Misle bin Haji Abdul Karim handed over the letters of appointment to 196 people comprising 27 mosque officials, 22 teaching staff, 122 students and 25 former students of Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.

The students are either those serving the government or are in higher education programmes. The newly-appointed imams will be placed in 82 mosques across the country.

Prior to their appointment, the imams were given a theoretical and practical briefing on Aqwal wa Af’aal of the Doa Tarawih, so that they could understand the correct kaifiyyat to lead the prayer including recitation and tuma’ninah, movement in prayer for the congregation to follow.

The appointment of the imams is part of efforts to increase the acts of worship as well as allow students to strengthen their memorisation of Al-Quran and gain experience as imams.

It is hoped that with their involvement, more congregants will attend prayers and enliven mosques during Ramadhan. – Azlan Othman
