The Ministry of Education (MoE) will continue its efforts to recruit teachers for special needs students including the use of an apprentice programme.

Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh said this in response to a question by Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Abdul Aziz bin Haji Hamdan regarding initiatives undertaken by the MoE on adding more special needs teachers to meet the demands of schools in the Sultanate.

The minister said Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE) at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) offers Masters of Teaching (MTeach) specialising in special education.

Teachers interested in special education will be channelled to the programme.

Forty-five teachers under the G1 category have been confirmed to their designation under the Special Education Department in collaboration with UBD in providing a programme under the Diploma in Education.

Meanwhile, several initiatives have been provided under the Special Education Department to train and attract teachers’ interest in becoming special needs teachers.

In realising the aspiration, the MoE is working with the Brunei Darussalam Leadership and Teacher Academy (BDLTA) to offer related courses.
