The redevelopment of Kampong Ayer remains under review, with plans to convert its wooden bridges into concrete structures along a 21.9-kilometre (km) stretch, Minister of Home Affairs Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman said at the 21st Legislative Council (LegCo) session yesterday.
Responding to a query from LegCo members, the minister said the initial project cost was estimated at BND32.8 million. However, the scope is being reassessed, focusing on phased upgrades to improve infrastructure.
Repair works on wooden bridges are ongoing under the supervision of the Public Works Department and the Brunei-Muara District Office.
From 2022 to 2024, repairs covering 7.127km were completed at a cost of BND815,988. Despite budget limitations, the Ministry of Home Affairs remains committed to maintaining these vital structures.
In the long term, the government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Development, will continue evaluating and implementing bridge upgrades based on available budget allocations.
The improvements will be carried out in stages to ensure sustainable infrastructure development for Kampong Ayer residents, the minister said. – Fadley Faisal
