Through the Brunei Darussalam Maritime Week (BDMW) 2024, we aim to bring to the forefront the industry, the people, seafarers, and mariners to acknowledge their invaluable contributions while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity, said Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha in his keynote address at the inaugural BDMW 2024 yesterday.
The minister emphasised the role of technological advancements, capacity building and partnerships in fostering the growth of Brunei’s maritime sector.
He highlighted ongoing developments, such as the Muara Port Expansion and Renovation Project, set for completion in 2027, and the Marine Maintenance and Decommissioning Yard (MMDY), expected to be operational by 2025.
The initiatives, he noted, demonstrate the sector’s critical contribution to Brunei’s export-driven economy. In his opening remarks, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam (MPABD) Captain (Rtd) Zil Husam bin Abdul Rahman described BDMW 2024 as a pivotal milestone in the nation’s maritime development.
He emphasised that the event aims to become a benchmark for the maritime sector, establishing itself as an annual platform for fostering both local and international engagement.
“BDMW is not only a showcase of Brunei’s maritime capabilities but also a reflection of our ambition to position Brunei as a leading hub for innovation, collaboration, and excellence in the global maritime industry,” Captain Zil Husam said.
The event, at the Banquet Hall, Bridex in Kampong Jerudong, is organised by MPABD under the theme ‘Technological Innovations and Sustainable Maritime Development’ echoing this year’s World Maritime Day focus, ‘Navigating the Future: Safety First’.
The highlight of the launch was the announcement of the Maritime Emergency Response Centre (MERC), equipped with cutting-edge technology and trained personnel to enhance safety and efficiency in maritime operations.
Another milestone was the introduction of the Maritime Single Window project, a digital transformation initiative aimed at streamlining operations and boosting efficiency.
The event also featured a live demonstration of the Sea Spraying Exercise by Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL) Singapore, showcasing Brunei’s readiness in managing maritime emergencies.
The three-day event, open to the public from yesterday until tomorrow at Bridex Hall 1, includes exhibitions by 35 participants, dialogue sessions with local and international experts, and activities aimed at promoting maritime career opportunities and innovations.
Topics such as vessel traffic services, seafarer safety, and maritime employment will be discussed in depth by experts from Brunei and abroad. – Fadley Faisal
