Ma’had Islam Brunei secured the prestigious Bronze Award (Exceptional Project by a Student Team) at the 2023-2024 Shell NXplorers Inspiration Awards for their innovative project, BioCO2 Capture, according to a press release from Seria Energy Lab (SEL).

The award celebrates the outstanding contributions of students, mentors, and facilitators who participated in the NXplorers programme throughout 2023 and 2024.

The NXplorers programme introduces students to the complex and creative thinking skills needed to drive positive change, equipping them with the tools to tackle real-world challenges fostering a generation of innovative thinkers.

Developed by Khaizuran bin Rezuan, Muhammad Fadhli Danial bin Fariz Surnaidi, and Nur Aleesya Basirah binti Asmadi, their project uses algae to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis. This eco-friendly technology directly addresses critical global concerns aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), and Climate Action (SDG 13).

The students’ success stems from months of perseverance and collaborative effort. Under the guidance of their supervising teacher and mentors of NXplorers Young Innovators (NXYI), the team honed their skills and developed their innovative concept.

NXYI is a program by SEL that integrates the NXplorers workshop with SEL’s Innovation Hub modules aimed at building essential 21st century skills in areas such as coding, design thinking, 3D printing, and robotics. Their journey also included competing in SEL’s Robotics and Innovation (ROBIN) Competition and the Petrosains RBTX Challenge in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

SEL will continue to strive in promoting STEM in the country to equip our younger generations with the necessary 21st century skills.,” said Dr. Nur Karnina Binti Karim, Head of Seria Energy Lab.

The BioCO2 Capture project is a testament to Brunei’s commitment to fostering innovation and sustainable development among its youth, ensuring a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
