The Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered a local to settle a BND43,880 fine after he pleaded guilty to possessing over 23 cartons of smuggled cigarettes.
Mohammad Rafiuddin bin Haji Samri would have to serve 16 months’ jail in default of payment of the fine.
The 39-year-old defendant also admitted to the facts laid out by the Customs prosecutor in court stating that he was found to have kept 23 cartons, 11 packets and seven sticks of cigarettes in a vehicle at a workshop in Kampong Anggerek Desa. BND708 in cash was also found at the scene, confirmed by the defendant to be proceeds of sales of cigarettes.
Senior Magistrate Harnita Zelda Skinner further heard that the findings was a result of an inspection by the Customs preventive officers at 5.25pm on July 7, 2022.
The court ordered the cigarettes destroyed and confiscated the cash.
