The Magistrate’s Court on Monday ordered a local man to settle a BND118,300 fine after he pleaded guilty to possessing undeclared cigarettes and smuggled booze in a boat.
Jamudin bin Haji Suhaili, 55, would have to serve 31 months’ jail in default of paying the fine.
The customs prosecutor informed Senior Magistrate Azrimah Abdul Rahman that the defendant was caught in a boat with a sizeable haul of 100 cartons of various brands of cigarettes, 2,784 cans of beer and 696 bottles of liquor at 1.15am on February 12.
This was a result of a joint operation between the customs preventive officers, the Marine Police of the Royal Brunei Police Force and the Royal Brunei Armed Forces in the waters of the Brunei River, just off Kampong Mentiri.
