Local fashion designer to showcase Bruneian styles in Indonesia

Brunei Darussalam’s local fashions will be on display at Indonesia Fashion Week (IFW) 2024 as a team of seven from a local art collective left for Jakarta yesterday.

“We are really excited to be at IFW 2024. This is the first time a group from Brunei is taking part in the event,” said Director and co-founder of FOFARED Pengiran Abdul Farid bin Pengiran Idrus. “We were supposed to participate last year, but couldn’t make it due to time constraints,” he said.

The fashion designer added that Indonesia is a country with similar culture and fashion to the Sultanate, citing the print on kain tenunan as an example. “I see there is a potential to market Brunei’s art and crafts, especially kain tenunan in Indonesia,” he said.

He said they will showcase Brunei’s traditional kain tenunan during the expo under the theme Keindahan seni, adat dan budaya, walaupun melintasi waktu.

“We collaborated with Little Ummi to bring the original kain tenunan Brunei and the digitally printed kain. It is a fusion of modern and traditional fashion, and we will be showcasing nine designs on the runway,” he added.

FOFARED is a creative platform for local youth active in the field of art.

The platform aims to produce youth who are skilled in various fields of art and creative activities through the sharing of knowledge and experience as well as helping turn these activities into side income.  – James Kon
