Local esports team SBD Vicious made the country proud after finishing second in the PUBG Mobile category at the Sarawak Esports Expo 2024 (Sarex24) at the MBKS Event Ground in Kuching recently.
The country’s representative finished behind Malaysia’s Team 52 who emerged champion and ahead of MPF EC also from Malaysia who settled for third place.
The team members comprised the quartet of Md Durrani Dhiyahyul Iman, Md Khairul Azizan, Md Wa’iz’adaniy, and Md Nur Aiman accompanied by Coach cum Manager Md Firdausi Asyura.
SBD Vicious’s reward in finishing second was a MYR9,000 cash prize with the winners and third place pocketing MYR15,000 and MYR5,000, respectively.
Md Firdausi said, “Finishing second place in a regional event is a very great achievement for us where we are not only competing against Malaysia but also a team from Cambodia.”
“It was nerve wrecking on the final map but our player held together and show their best skills during the game.”
The PUBG Mobile event, which kicked off from December 13 to 15, saw the participation of 47 teams the majority of whom are from the host country Malaysia as well as three from Brunei Darussalam and one from Cambodia.
Brunei’s ESB came in fifth during the three-day meet with Ultra XI finishing in 16th place.
Organised by the Sarawak ESports Association (SESA), the three-day meet assembled 5,000 visitors and participants across multiple tournament categories and interactive sessions, making it the largest esports gathering in Sarawak to date.
State Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts of Sarawak Datuk Snowdan Lawan officiated the closing ceremony of the event. – Fadhil Yunus
