Members of Brunei Darussalam’s Legislative Council (LegCo) participated in the 11th Plenary Meeting of the International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace (IPTP) held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from November 23 to 26, 2024.
Representing Brunei were Yang Berhormat Dr Awang Haji Mahali bin Haji Momin and Yang Berhormat Awang Amran bin Haji Maidin, accompanied by an officer from the Department of Councils of State.
The meeting, hosted by the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia in collaboration with the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace (GCTP), gathered 275 delegates from 53 countries. With the theme “A Quest for Peace, Reconciliation, and Tolerance,” the event focused on pressing global issues surrounding peace and tolerance.
During the Opening Session, President of the Cambodian Senate, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, was presented with the “Peace Medal: For People and the Planet” in recognition of his leadership and contributions to peace and social development through Cambodia’s Win-Win Policy.
A significant outcome of the meeting was the adoption of the Universal Peace Charter, aligned with the United Nations Charter. The document outlines five core actions to address natural disasters, food security, and justice in the governance of global systems.
The plenary also saw the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between GCTP and several international organisations, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP), and ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). These agreements aim to foster tolerance and mutual understanding among nations.
At the Closing Session, President of Cambodia’s National Assembly, Samdech Moha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, emphasised the importance of cross-border collaboration in building a regional peace ecosystem. She also highlighted the need for empowering women to achieve sustainable peace and prosperity.
