I would like to applaud the authorities for expanding their no-plastic initiative to Gerai Ramadhan at Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium this year and encouraging visitors to bring their own reusable bags, containers, tiffin and tumblers.
It is definitely a step in the right direction, and I hope the move will receive a lot of public support.
However, I believe more can be done to reduce plastic waste.
While supermarkets no longer offer shoppers single-use plastic bags, the reusable ones are still made of plastic. Perhaps it is time to switch to canvas bags, which are better for the environment and last longer.
I would also like to call on the authorities to hold more campaigns on plastic pollution, to educate not just the public but also businesses. After all, the war on plastic is not the responsibility of individuals. To achieve any semblance of success will require the involvement of all levels of society, from the government to businesses and the public.
