SURAKARTA, Central Java (Bernama-ANTARA) – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has registered to change his residence to Surakarta, Central Java, as he will relocate to his hometown after his presidential tenure ends this month, reported ANTARA news agency.
“Mr President has applied to have his residency re-registered as Surakarta last September,” Surakarta City’s Regional Secretary, Budi Murtono, stated here on Wednesday (October 2).
Murtono remarked that the local authority has no plan to organise any ceremony to welcome Jokowi and First Lady Iriana, who are resuming their stay in Surakarta after a decade in Jakarta.
The regional secretary also stated that the residence of Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka is still registered in Surakarta. He remarked that the local authority had yet to receive an application from Gibran to shift his residency to the nation’s capital.
Hence, unless they change their residency again, Jokowi and Gibran will be registered to vote for the 2024 local elections in Surakarta.
Surakarta City’s General Elections Commission (KPU) Head, Bambang Christanto, earlier confirmed that Jokowi and Iriana have been registered to vote in polling station no.12 in Sumber Village, Banjarsari Sub-district.
Meanwhile, Gibran and his spouse, Selvi Ananda, have been registered in the voter’s roll of polling station no.18 in Manahan Village, also in Banjarsari.
Christanto said no special treatment would be given to the president’s family, as according to regulations, priority treatment will be conferred only to the elderly and voters who are sick, pregnant, or disabled.
Last June, the State Secretariat Ministry’s secretary, Setya Utama, confirmed that Jokowi has selected plot of land in Karanganyar in Central Java, close to his hometown, Surakarta, for his future residence.
According to law, former presidents and vice presidents are entitled to receive a one-time house grant, inclusive of furniture and facilities, from the state.
Utama remarked that the home on the selected land plot would be ready for immediate use by the retired president once his term ended.
