Ipoh loud bang remains a mystery, says Malaysian police

ANN/THE STAR – Malaysian police are still baffled by the ‘loud bang’ that shook Ipoh on October 21 and startled many people.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said police investigations into the incident are still ongoing.

“Police have not been able to confirm the sound. It is still a mystery,” he said after attending the handover ceremony for the Kelantan police chief’s post at the state headquarters yesterday. Perak police chief Azizi Mat Aris said that experts have refuted claims that the sound came from an earthquake, sonic boom or quarry explosion.

“It remains a mystery, but we will continue the investigation if there is evidence it can be associated with tremors,” he told a press conference after chairing a special meeting with 20 public and private agencies to discuss the actual cause of the incident yesterday.

Azizi also said they did not receive any reports of property damage or casualties resulting from the incident.

“The Perak Fire and Rescue Department and the Malaysian Volunteer Corps Department also did not receive emergency reports due to the tremors,” he said.

He told the public not to be alarmed by the incident and to continue with their daily activities. “If anyone has any evidence related to the incident, please come forward,” he said.
