International school students do well in biology competition

Thirty-nine Year 12 Biology students from Jerudong International School (JIS) entered the Intermediate Biology Olympiad held by UK Biology Competitions (UKBC) recently.

Matthew Lin received gold for being in the top five per cent of participants.

Hariz Rahman, Aneeza Mohammed Shamsul, Rui Yi Ang, Varsha Gopinath Lakshmi, Widad Sahraini, Tania Teo, and Joe Barton achieved silver (top 15 per cent) while Nadya Affendy, Ryan Ait Oumessaoud, Benjamin Sheehan, Oscar Morley, Akshayaa Thayaparan, Shanzeh Omar and Timo Stapel won bronze (top 25 per cent). In addition, five JIS students were highly commended and five more were commended. Overall, 64 per cent of the JIS entries were commended or higher.

Biology teacher Adele Major was delighted with the result while Principal Nicholas Sheehan said, “Biology ‘A’ Level is a popular subject at JIS and I am very proud of these remarkable achievements. My congratulations go to all of the students who participated.”

E-certificates were awarded to students and all participating students also received free Royal Society of Biology BioNet membership for one year.
