The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) issued a compound fine on an individual and a company for the sale and operation of walkie-talkies without licences. The individual and the company were issued a compound fine of BND700 each.
According to AITI, the individual was found selling radio-communications equipment without a valid dealer’s licence while the company was found using walkie-talkies without the operating licences issued by AITI.
The offences are punishable under Sections 34 and 35 of the Telecommunications Order, 2001. Those found guilty of such infringements can be issued a compound fine of up to BND1,000 for each offence.
A warning notice was also issued to the individual for failing to obtain approval for the equipment pursuant to Section 9 of the Telecommunications Order, 2001.
AITI reminded the public that unlicensed systems or services may cause interference to critical infrastructure and essential services, which may disrupt the day-to-day operations of government agencies, local service providers, educational institutions and businesses relying on telecommunications.
The public is advised to obtain AITI approval prior to installing telecommunications system, providing telecommunications service or operating telecommunications or radio-communications equipment. – James Kon
