Thailand ranks 5th globally for tourist driver anxiety: survey

BANGKOK (ANN/THE NATION) – Thailand has been ranked as the fifth most nerve-racking country for tourists to drive in, according to a recent survey by UK-based Scrap Car Comparison, a company focused on vehicle valuation.

With many travelers choosing to rent cars for greater freedom in exploring new destinations, the survey aimed to reveal which countries tourists find most anxiety-inducing for driving, and the reasons behind these concerns. Conducted with over 2,000 motorists, the survey asked participants to rate how nervous they would feel driving in various countries, with 1 being “not nervous at all” and 10 being “extremely nervous.”

India topped the list with a “scare score” of 7.15 out of 10, marking it as the most intimidating country for foreign motorists. Venezuela followed with a score of 6.97, with Zimbabwe (6.9), Morocco (6.87), and Thailand (6.86) rounding out the top five. Thailand narrowly outranked China, which scored 6.84 to take sixth place. Tunisia, Brazil, Colombia, and Malaysia completed the top 10.

The survey identified key factors that contribute to tourist driving anxiety in Thailand and other countries. Driving on the opposite side of the road ranked as the top concern, cited by 56.2 per cent of drivers. Dangerous driving by other motorists ranked a close second at 55.9 per cent, while 52.7 per cent of respondents worried about accidentally violating traffic laws abroad.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Netherlands was considered the least anxiety-inducing for tourists, scoring 4.41 out of 10.
