Indian court sentences police volunteer to life in prison for rape, murder of doctor

NEW DELHI (ANN/DAILY STAR) – A Kolkata court on Tuesday has sentenced police volunteer Sanjoy Roy to life imprisonment for the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, a crime that sparked national outrage.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Anirban Das of Sealdah District Sessions Court this afternoon, three days after finding Roy guilty of the heinous crime.

During the trial, India’s federal investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), described the act as one of the “rarest of rare” cases and sought the death penalty for Roy.

“We pray for the highest penalty to maintain people’s faith in society,” the CBI lawyer urged the court before the sentencing.

The incident, which occurred in August last year, involved the sexual assault and subsequent murder of the doctor, leaving the nation shocked and demanding justice. Last Friday, the court found Roy guilty of the crime.

However, Judge Das ruled that the case did not meet the legal criteria for the “rarest of the rare” category, which would warrant capital punishment. Consequently, Roy was handed a life sentence.

The case has been widely followed across the country, reigniting discussions on women’s safety and the need for stringent measures to prevent such crimes.
