Islamic calligraphy, regarded as one of the most significant art forms in Islamic tradition, combines the beauty of Arabic script with profound spiritual meaning. It serves not only as an artistic expression but also as an act of worship and reverence for Al-Quran.
Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Mosque in Kampong Sungai Akar hosted a special event showcasing the intricate art of Islamic calligraphy.
The event’s highlight was a demonstration by imam Yahya Ma Yiping from China, a renowned expert in Islamic calligraphy. The session began with Isyak prayer led by imam Yahya, followed by a live demonstration of his mastery in khat, showcasing his precise and elegant strokes. Imam Yahya’s journey into Arabic studies and calligraphy began at the young age of 10, igniting a lifelong passion that has earned him recognition across the Islamic world. During the demonstration, attendees, including mosque congregants and local residents, observed his techniques closely, using specialised tools to create exquisite Al-Quran verses.
One of the attendees, Haji Awang Hasbollah bin Haji Awang Damit, expressed excitement about meeting the accomplished calligrapher.
Speaking to the media, he shared, “Although it was a brief opportunity, witnessing his effortless hand movements as he crafted these beautiful Al-Quran verses on special paper was truly inspiring.”
