Some 130 students of Sayyidina Husain Secondary School on Saturday attended the Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council (BDAIDSCouncil) HIV Awareness Programme for Peers and Youths (HAPPY) aimed to expand knowledge on teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

The youth-led project is an interactive programme using audio, visuals and activities to share messages with young people, tailored to the local context. HAPPY Project Coordinator Siti Kailene Jazlan Kashfi representing the BDAIDSCouncil delivered and facilitated the programme, sharing the latest local statistics on STIs and teenage pregnancy by highlighting the dominating age and gender recorded.

She also said that the figures can be curbed by applying abstinence as part of preventing youth from getting involved in risky behaviours leading to STIs, getting pregnant out of wedlock or early marriage.

The BDAIDSCouncil hopes students will take the messages home, learn from them and apply them in their daily lives. – James Kon
